Did you know?
Did you know that ALL horses, even at rest require a minimum of 2 tablespoons of iodized table salt per day? Not Himalayan salt but good old regular table salt from your local grocery store. It's not only cheaper but in some cases can even cause digestive issues, it lacks a necessary component, iodine which is essential for the horse's thyroid gland.
The best thing you can do for your horse is put 2 tablespoons in their daily grain, over and above a free choice block in the pasture, salt is vital to keep the horses cells functioning correctly, it can also encourage more intake of water.
If your horse is in training or showing you can add the required amount of electrolytes over and above the salt. In some cases, it will be difficult to get your horse to eat it, but add it slowly and stick with it, they will eventually eat up. I like to add water to my horse's grain and it dilutes it a bit.
